A springboard for aspiring Malaysian composers to flourish and embark on a transformative journey.
The Emerging Composers Initiative (ECI) returns in 2026 to support the development of emerging Malaysian composers through mentorship, professional guidance and new performance opportunities.
Open to composers and musicians living, studying or working in Malaysia, regardless of age, the programme connects selected participants with experienced mentors from Malaysia and the United Kingdom.
This year, ECI focuses on solo piano composition under the theme Sounds of Malaysia. Participants will be encouraged to explore Malaysia’s cultures, landscapes, communities and contemporary life, while developing a distinctive musical voice of their own.
4 to 6 composers will be selected for a 6-week fully subsidised development programme featuring online workshops, one-to-one mentoring and peer exchange. Their newly created works will be premiered at a dedicated recital in December 2026.
Through Sounds of Malaysia, ECI also aims to build a growing collection of new piano works rooted in Malaysian experiences, perspectives and musical imagination.
The Emerging Composers Initiative is presented with the generous support of ABRSM, Strategic Partner of Rondo Production.
