Hong Kong-born Yiu Song-Lam is a distinguished oboist who has worked in the music industry as a performer, educator, and entrepreneur. An early graduate of the HK Academy for Performing Arts, Yiu was awarded the Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship to study abroad at the Queensland Conservatorium in Australia, the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Rotterdam Conservarorium in Holland and the Köln Musikhochschule in Germany.

 

Currently the Head of Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion at the HK Academy for Performing Arts, yiu is also the founding Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Wind Kamerata and has served as the honorary artist-in-residence at the Education University of HK, the HK Chinese University, and the Radio & Telvision Hong Kong. Since 2022, Yiu has been elected as the oboe at-large director of the International Double Reed Society (IDRS) and is the vice president of the Asian Double Reed Association (ADRA), he is highly regarded for his contributions in developing the double reed network regionally and internationally.

 

Yiu has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras worldwide and has been invited to perform with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under the baton of Sir Neville Marriner and with the London Virtuosi on their Spain tour. He has shared the stage with world-class artists at prestigious international music festivals and is also an avid promoter of contemporary music and has premiered numerous works by local and overseas composers for the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) and other occasions.

 

As a dedicated educator, Yiu has given masterclasses worldwide including the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Lyon in France and École Normale de Musique de Paris in France, Leipzig Musikhochschule and Stuttgart Musikhochschule in Germany, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Beijing Central Conservatory of Music, Xi’an Conservatory of Music, Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, Xinghai Conservatory of Music, Shenzhen Arts School, Taiwan National Chiayi University, Tainan University of Technology, Vietnam Ho Chi Ming City Conservatory, Singapore Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Mahidol University in Thailand and Chung Ang University in Korea. Yiu has been a visiting professor at the Shanghai Conservatory since 2016.

 

Yiu is regularly invited to adjudicate at prestigious international competitions, notably the Muri International Oboe Competition in Switzerland, the IDRS Fernard Gillet-Hugo Fox International Oboe Competition, IDRS International Young Artist Oboe Competition, the Concours International Musique de Chambre in Lyon, France, and the prestigious Geneva Competition 2021.

 

His students have won major prizes in many international competitions and have been appointed to key positions in renowned orchestras across Europe and Asia. Yiu was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in recognition of his significant contributions to the music profession.
