Rondo Brass is Malaysia’s leading brass collective for ambitious young musicians. Designed for long-term growth rather than one-off projects, it provides valuable training in ensemble playing, dynamic rehearsals and meaningful performance opportunities, connecting young talent with professional standards and international artistic experiences.

Our mission is to empower young brass musicians by providing them with disciplined ensemble training, professional performance experience and clear progression pathways, from youth development to advanced ensemble work. We also aim to cultivate leadership, commitment and artistic excellence within a vibrant, future-focused brass ecosystem.

We are looking for all brass instrumentalists in Malaysia who are eager to commit, grow, and perform at a competitive level.

Rondo Brass

Our flagship ensemble is open to committed brass musicians of all ages. Admission is primarily by audition, though invitation-based consideration is also available where appropriate. While members are not required to be music students, they should represent the highest artistic level within the Rondo Brass ecosystem.

Rondo Youth Brass

A dedicated development pathway for young brass musicians. Admission is strictly by audition only. The ensemble focuses on structured training, ensemble discipline and progression towards advanced artistic opportunities.

Both ensembles share unified auditions and training, enabling continuity, progression, and growth across Rondo Brass ecosystem.

Auditions

  • Auditions are open for: Trumpet, Cornet, Flugelhorn, French Horn, Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Baritone, Tuba
  • Auditions are conducted live in Selangor.
  • Video auditions may be accepted only for applicants based outside the Klang Valley, but successful candidates must attend at least 75% of rehearsals in person in Selangor once an offer is accepted. Please note that the application fee for video auditions is non-refundable.
  • All applicants audition through a single unified audition process.

Performances

  • Participants may expect 2 to 3 public performances per year.
  • Participation in RondoFest or other major projects may require additional auditions or confirmation.
  • Performance opportunities, including participation in festivals and international projects, are opportunity-based and subject to separate selection or audition where applicable.

Rehearsals

  • Rehearsals are conducted in Selangor.
  • Ensemble seating, roles, and participation are determined per project.
  • A minimum attendance threshold of 75% is required for all accepted participants.
  • Continued participation is contingent on artistic preparedness and professional commitment.
  • Rehearsal schedules are organised on a project basis.
  • For the first project, scheduling considerations will be taken into account after the audition results are announced. Rehearsal plans will then be finalised in coordination with the selected participants.

Development Opportunities

Participants in Rondo Brass and Rondo Youth Brass may be offered development opportunities including, but not limited to:

  • Masterclasses with professional and internationally active brass musicians
  • Chamber music coaching and ensemble development
  • Chamber and ensemble performances
  • Rehearsals and performances led by professional brass musicians
  • Opportunities to participate in festivals and selected projects abroad

All opportunities are offered on a project or programme basis, subject to artistic requirements and availability.

How to Apply

Applications for 2026 Season now open until 16 Feb 2026!

  1. Complete the Audition Application Form and submit a refundable audition fee of RM50. The fee will be fully refunded upon attendance at the live audition.
  2. Please prepare the following audition requirements before 1 Mar 2026:
    • 2 short contrasting solo pieces (approximately Grade 5 standard), performed without accompaniment. Please bring an additional copy of your music for the audition panel.
    • Scales/arpeggios: You will be asked to perform at least 2 major and 2 minor scales (with arpeggios) from memory.
    • Sight reading: You may be asked to perform one sight-reading excerpt, with approximately 30 seconds of preparation time.
  3. Audition details, including venue and time, will be communicated on 19 Feb 2026.
  4. For applicants submitting video auditions, submission instructions will also be shared on 19 Feb 2026. All video audition clips must be submitted no later than 1 March 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply to Rondo Brass?
If you play a brass instrument and are based in Selangor, or are willing to travel there for rehearsals and projects, you are eligible to apply.
Do I need to be a music student to join?
No, applicants do not need to be enrolled in a music institution. Commitment and preparedness matter most.
How are Rondo Brass and Rondo Youth Brass different?
Rondo Youth Brass focuses on developing musicians under the age of 30, while Rondo Brass is the core ensemble open to musicians of all ages. Both groups share unified auditions and training frameworks.
Can I choose between Rondo Brass and Rondo Youth Brass?
Yes, you can indicate your preference on the application form, and you will be assessed accordingly. However, please note that applicants are typically accepted into one ensemble only.
Who is eligible to submit a video audition?
Video auditions are accepted only for applicants based outside the Klang Valley.
Is the audition fee refundable for video auditions?
Application fees for video auditions are non-refundable, regardless of the outcome.
How often are rehearsals held?
Rehearsals are organised on a project-by-project basis. Once selected, participants are expected to commit to the scheduled rehearsals. Additional scheduling considerations may be given for the first project as the ensemble is being established.
Will I be removed if I cannot attend 75% of rehearsals?
No, you will remain on the roster, but you will not be assigned to projects where you cannot meet the 75% attendance requirement. There will be other projects available in future.
Are instruments provided?
No, participants are expected to bring and use their own instruments.
Are performances guaranteed after joining?
Performance opportunities are project-based and subject to selection. Participation in major projects or festivals may require additional auditions or confirmation.
